Herbert Werner - Wikipedia - Werner then took command of U-953, in August 1944 and escaped with her to Norway, from whence he made one unfruitful patrol before the German surrender in May 1945. Werner is thought to have moved to the US in 1957, and there wrote the best selling memoir Iron Coffins. He is believed to have died on 4 (or 6) April 2013 in Vero Beach, Florida.

Iron Coffins: A Personal Account Of The German U-boat ... - Fascinating stuff, although admittedly not a literary classic. I think the main difference between this and Das Boot is that the latter manages to convey the tension of the periods spent at sea out of battle. In Iron Coffins, however, it's pretty much non-stop warfare. I would have liked more description of life on board: what was it like, who were the men, what was the food like, how did they overcome the fear, etc. Still, a highly recommended book.
